How to Track Your Fitness Evolution

October 18, 2021

No matter why you’ve decided to embark on your own fitness journey, the end goal should always be the same: to feel a sense of accomplishment and see the real-world results of your hard work. Personal fitness should always be for your own mental and physical wellbeing. And what better way to boost both than by tracking your progress as you grow stronger? In order to help you record and maintain your fitness evolution, here’s a list of ways you can keep track of the information needed to record your personal growth:

Keep a Progress Notebook

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Using and maintaining a fitness notebook is one of the most tried and true methods to maintain and record your fitness progress. Whether you’re at home or in the gym, each workout should be logged and dated so that you can go back and see what you’ve done. For weighted workouts, write down the number of reps and sets you complete with the amount of weight next to each set. This will make it easier to recall exactly how heavy you were pushing the last time you completed a certain workout and inform how heavy you should go the next time. For cardio workouts, log which exercise you completed, for how long, and level of resistance (if applicable) each time.

Seeing your past workouts physically on paper not just makes recollection easier, but it can also serve as a form of motivation. If you’re having a slow start to your workout, being able to look back on what you were able to do in the past can be the spark of motivation you need to get ready to set some new personal bests.

Take Progress Pictures

When embarking on a fitness journey, sometimes it can be hard to remember exactly where you were when you started. Think about it: you live every single day in the same body, so gradual changes over time can be hard to miss if you aren’t paying close enough attention. Taking progress pictures can be a great way to have a visual representation of just how far you’ve come along. Whether it’s weekly or monthly, you should have pictures to compare and contrast how your body has evolved and grown stronger over time.

This doesn’t just mean that you should just take a simple mirror selfie, though. Make sure you’re including pictures of your back and legs as well so you can accurately track the evolution of each core muscle group in your body. Not only will these pictures help you keep tabs on your progress, but being able to see your body transformation over time through progress pictures is a great way to feel accomplished and push you to work even harder.

Buy a Fitness Watch

If you’re looking for an even more in-depth way to track your workouts and progress, look no further than the 21st century’s answer to the progress notebook. Fitness watches like a Fitbit or Apple Watch can be the perfect companion for you along your workout journey. Additionally, they pair perfectly with a progress notebook so you can get a holistic overview of how each and every workout goes. These watches can track your heartrate, number of steps, distance traveled, number of calories burned, and even how well you sleep! There’s a seemingly endless amount of features a fitness watch can bring to the table.

Some may even allow you to select a workout and provide feedback specifically catered to what it was you were doing. If you’re serious about cutting weight and focusing heavily on cardio, then a fitness watch is a sound investment to make. While it’s certainly the most expensive option on this list, the information and real-time feedback one could provide should definitely be taken into consideration.

Take Body Measurements

If you’re looking to see just how much your muscles have grown and your tummy has shrunk, a tape measurer could be your new best friend. While progress pictures can provide a good sight test to see how much your body has evolved, taking body measurements provides hard numbers than can be compared and contrasted over time. No matter what it is you want to achieve, this method should provide feedback and motivation across the board.

If you’re looking to gain muscle, measuring parts of the body like bicep diameter, shoulder/chest width, and calf mass can tell you just how much you’ve gained in a period of time. For those looking to lose weight, measuring waist size can do more than just help you find out what size pants you need to buy—it can tell you just how much you’ve reduced fat and transformed your body.
