Exercises for Your Body and Mind

November 23, 2021

When it comes to exercising, your physical health isn’t the only thing you should be focusing on. Each workout provides an opportunity to strengthen your mental fortitude just as much as the muscle groups you’re growing over time. Your mental health is just as (if not more) important as your physical health, so you should utilize every possibility to work your brain hard, too. But what if you could stimulate both your mind and body at the same time? Look no further! Here’s a list we’ve put together or exercises you can do either at the gym or at home in order to give yourself a workout that will build your mental and physical fitness simultaneously:

Yoga

Yoga is one of the first things that comes to mind when you think of a workout for your body and mind, and for good reason. It’s a workout that specializes in focus; body awareness is heightened, so you can work specific regions of your body while keeping your mental awareness sharp as well. When in a state of hyper-focus, your body and mind work in tandem with one another to provide an all-encompassing, holistic workout. Doing yoga also gives you the opportunity to self-reflect and meditate while working core muscle groups. You can even turn up the heat with hot yoga to increase sweat and burn additional calories. No matter what it is you’re trying to achieve during your fitness journey, yoga is an addition that can benefit everyone.
Seeing your past workouts physically on paper not just makes recollection easier, but it can also serve as a form of motivation. If you’re having a slow start to your workout, being able to look back on what you were able to do in the past can be the spark of motivation you need to get ready to set some new personal bests.

Coordination Training

Much like yoga, coordination training provides a workout that keeps your mind stimulated by focusing on a specific task. From jump rope to reaction balls to balance training, coordination training includes a multitude of workouts that will work your mind like no other. Professional athletes across all sports utilize coordination training as a means to gain muscle while keeping their minds healthy through focus and problem solving. Even something as unassuming as juggling can keep your body moving while actively working your brain.

Cardio

Like death and taxes, cardio is unavoidable in any fitness journey, but that’s a good thing! Getting your legs moving and your heart pumping will only bring good things to your health. One of the most underrated aspects of cardio is how well it works your brain, though. It takes a lot of grit, motivation, and self-esteem to push yourself to your limits while doing cardio exercises and going further, faster, and harder than you could’ve ever imagined. It works wonders for your confidence and provides a huge sense of accomplishment when you hit a new personal-best time or distance. Plus, going on a run outdoors gives you a lot of time to self-reflect and spend some well-earned alone time with yourself.

Bonus: Dieting

While not an exercise, maintaining a healthy diet is essential to maximizing your physical and mental fitness. When your body isn’t bogged down by unhealthy foods, your alertness and overall mood increases with each healthy meal you consume each day. There’s no better feeling than walking around with a body fueled by clean food, so it’s important not to underrate what you eat each day. The difference it will make on your fitness journey cannot be understated, so make sure you’re committing to a healthy diet day in and day out.
